Is he DP?
-
He’s a single sooty, and seems dark for a single sooty.

By contrast, there are both double sooty.

Yes
-
That’s what I thought :D
Now the question becomes... splurge for his missing sooty or just leave him be and breed him as is... hmm.... -
Oh, I would definitely splurge! :))
-
Agreed! Splurge lol
-
Well. He didn’t change to a liver so I guess the answer was no. :(
-
I don’t understand. How was he as dark as a double sooty with only only a single sooty? I wish I could get my GMT token back. I feel cheated. :(
-
He didn’t change when I added the second sooty.
-
So changing the second sooty didn't make any difference at all?
That is very odd since the only difference between him and the second guy now is aa vs. Aa. I remember seeing this thread before you GMTed...ID: 247225
she/herDP & Dapples
Collector of tall, dark dappled riding horses in all shades. -
That's odd! He was definitely too dark for a het sooty...
-
No, it didn’t! I’m shocked. I never would had GMT’d him if I’d known.
-
Maybe rerolling image? I've had that happen before where the image needed refreshing before it show...
-
I just re-rolled. If anything he’s lighter. :(
-
How the heck?
-
I would have just stuck him in the auction without further testing if he’d been normal. I hate him now, but I’m stuck with him because I spent money on him. He’s of no use to me as is.
-
If anything you can put him against liver mares.
-
I already have a double sooty flaxen chestnut stallion to breed to my liver mares. I was trying for a stallion with something more to offer my line.
-
I sent you something to help you recover, hope it helps!
-
Aww, thank you! That does help :x
-
Aww that sucks that he did not turn out to be a DP carrier!
The thing with DP is that it is very hard to spot, as there are also different shades of normal horses.
Take these 3 horses for example, all three are StySty bays:
zMS Greatshow9
zMS Greatshow17
zMS Greatshow16
But they do seem to have a different hue. So the second one (Show17) could be easily mistaken for a DP as she is a bit darker.
So for me to be absolutely sure if a horse has DP I always try to breed them with a non-DP carrier (especially stysty chestnuts are good for this) to see if they produce a liver foal or not. Breeding might take a bit longer but is always more cheap than GMTing. And if your horse turns out to be a DP carrier you can always yumm the foals and GMT him anyway.
For some more examples, take a look at these StySty chestnut flaxen foundations: there are many different hues among them! (there are some DPs in there too)
