Slow down varnishing?
-
I love appaloosas, and especially snowflake, but I have recently found myself breeding it out from my lines, as they varnish out so fast. I remember hearing something abut there being some kind of genetics behind how fast a horse will varnish, and if that is the case, would it be possible to get the opportunity to change the speed of varnishing in the GMT-lap or with real money or just to generally slow down the process? They are so beautiful, and I would love to have some more time to enjoy their patterns before they turn completly whitePost edited by Herzeloyde at 2019-03-08 10:20:20

It’s a big reason I don’t actively seek appy and I’m trying to breed it out of my lines. :/
-
I have appaloosas that are slow to varnish out, and others that completely varnish out, but I don't know what the difference is. I think it's something hidden.
-
Yup - that is why I am culling the Lp from my lines as well. I don't want just a "white" horse.
-
@Forestshadow: I also think there are some hidden genetics at play, and I have probably used super fast varnishing horses to create my line, because most of my horses are more or less completly white by the age of 10.
The problem is that there is no way to know how fast a foundation will varnish until the horse ages up, and by then I have spent hundreds of real life dollars (and also hajibucks) on adding genes like Snowflake, DP, St+, Satin, KitM, all the sabinos etc on them, and bred them. If there was a way to change the speed of varnish, like we can with WF, height or bone weight, it would be fantastic! Or maybe even a semi-realistic fantasy gene, that prevents varnishing from happening at all, so that we can enjoy the beautiful artwork longer, and have more fun breeding :)Post edited by Herzeloyde at 2019-03-08 16:22:16 -
Oh, I like the idea of a varnish speed gene! That would be so cool!

When snowflake is for sale in the RGS, i noticed that some horses i want to add it to have Vrn or V on the strand that snowflake goes on. Since snowflake is a form of varnish, it makes sense that Vrn stands for varnish and V is recessive varnish. So maybe making the Varnish gene GMTable might help? Maybe horses that are VV versus VrnVrn or VrnV don't varnish at all or at the very least, very little.Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

I am gonna do an experiment with some horses on haj 2 since snowflake is for sale over there. I am gonna find a VV appy, VrnV appy, and a VrnVrn appy and watch the varnishing in action :)Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

@HayesStable I’d love to see what happens with your experiment, especially because Snowflake is one of my favourite genes. I get the feeling you may be onto something :)User ID: 225765Thanked by 1HayesStable

sooo I had to go look for myself so here are some of my foundations I have added snowflake to for example. I would love if there was a way to slow varnishing

Maybe if we ask Ammit pretty please with a cherry on top?

I know for sure Snowflake will varnish out no matter what because its an "extreme" version of the varnish gene. Here is how i am guessing it works:
Going from quickest to slowest "white out":
1 Hom Snowflake VsnVsn
2 Hom Varnish VrnVrn
3 Het Snowflake Het Varnish VsnVrn
4 Het Snowflake VsnV or VVsn
5 Het Varnish VrnV or VVrn
6 Recessive Varnish/Snowflake VV
This is what i am aiming to test on the other server. I have multiple horses to represent each category and will follow their progress each season. If you are all interested, i can create a chat room to keep up to date with the progress of these horses. I plan on saving new images each season to see the progress of the varnishing.

I do have a bit of a speed bump, however. In order to be certain i have foundations who are VVsn (Het snowflake/Het recessive varnish) and VrnVsn (Het varnish/het snowflake) I would have to buy at least 2 copies (one for each horse on the proper strand) and i don't think i can do that. If there is anyone on the forest server who can help out with this, i can pay in hbs over there after i pay another player. Ideally i would want two horses in both these categories but that amounts to $30 that i can't spend right now. But i do have all the other horses that i will need. This is my only road block for getting the best dataBluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

Ok so i am quickly working on a solution to the above problem but I at least have the other horses ready to go! I will go ahead and make a chat room for those interested in following the progress over the next few seasons!Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

The chat room is public. I will post the starting images of the horses i have so far in just a minute!

Yeah this is a really neat projectThanked by 1HayesStable

No problem! I am actually really excited to see the results! It will take a while since the varnishing only happens monthly (i believe) but it will definitely be worth it! And i might have someone willing to help me out with my snowflake dilemma so fingers crossed!Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

Is there a way to find out how fast a horse will varnish before he is old?
-
Yes, by looking at how much varnish it as a very young horse.Need to contact me? Read this first.
