The dapples! Look at the dapples!
-
:)) :))
None of us need more horses. But it doesn’t seem to stop us! :))
(By the way, I have show horse prospects in the auction too lol) -
I just finished GMing up a pair of studs to be the start of a new line, and I'm *so thrilled* with how they turned out! I gots dapples for days!
PPN F Solid Foundations
I've got a ton of foals off them that look like this
PPN G1 7943790 Sup Mare
and exactly one that looks like this

Pretty dapples!

What do you get when you cross a King's Ransom to a Freaky Friday? Well, lots of possibilities, including
7996117
I'll be papering him tonight, everyone cross your fingers and toes for me! -
My OP baby is a King’s Random offspring, too!
I wonder if they have something that gives their babies amazing dapples when crossed on DP?Post edited by paradoxphoenix at 2019-03-10 15:35:19 -
I suspect he's actually a dark silver brown, so maybe silver + Dp? I'm not color testing him until he's papered though- the temptation would be too strong.
-
-
@Jessj *snickers* I'm not sorry ;)
-
@SherwoodStables lol I don't think any of us are >:)
-
I’m starting to think that maybe pulling my Kings Ransom mare out of pasture was a mistake....
-
:)) I've pulled most of mine. Bred through them all now I'm culling HARD.
-
Awww if only I would have know that...cause I just got this beautiful Freaky Friday stallion that would have got along greatly with my King Ransoms mare.

This may be a stupid question but how do you breed for those beautiful dapples?
-
Oh @OkieWindsStables that first one is Soooo beautiful!♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ I need to get Chinchilla this year that's for certain!Thanked by 1OkieWindsStables
-
@SheebaArab - I was told its the sooty that causes dapples
-
So I thought too until I came across these two...so now I'm all cufuffled...and I mean their dapples shine all the way through up to their necks!

I've started wondering if it's actually DP...
I just got a het sooty and het DP chestnut mare that had dapples... added another sooty to her and she turned liver..

Look what I just got from my pasture on the other server! EEEAAAAKKK! And she passed!♥️♥️

@Bambi207
Basically there are 3 things that influence the amount of dapples: DP, Sty+ and Silver. Imagine having all on that on one horse
DP makes the coat darker, so the dapples are more pronounced. STY+ causes Dappling in itself, but if the horse already has some dappling that gets more pronounced too. Silver horses also have dappling more often than non silver horses, plus the silver makes the coat slightly dilluted so the dapples show better (just like the dapples show better on buckskins).
This horse is hetero DP with some dapples:
MS2 Sugarolas hetKPDP
This one is homo DP and also has S+, you see there are more pronounced dapples:
MS3 SilverlightTurksSFpGP
This is a buckskin with DP and S+:
MS3 DAPPLYDEE SHOWW
This is a silver buckskin dun (het DP, no s+), you see a little bit of dappling.
MS2 SuggyishYou KPhDP
This is a silver bay dun (het DP, no S+, but 1 sty more than the horse above), you see the dappling better:
MS2 NICE 7666908
Some more silver examples:
These are two regular silver black horses, 1st one has no sty at all, 2nd one has 2 copies of normal sty.
MSRrs In Time
MS Public Chanel L
This horse has S+, adding more dapples:
MS Whirling Steak KP
It's a bit harder to see but this horse is a silver smokey black with 1 copy of S+, but also having 1 copy of cream that dillutes the coat. To me, that makes the dapples stand out even more.
MS7 MilleniumWhirlig
Finally, this is a hetero DP S+ Silver Black horse, making the coat darker and thus making the dapples stand out even more:
MS2 SummerReturnedGPDP
So to conclude, a normal horse can have some dapples, but that's rare. Silver horses have dapples more often, as well as DP horses. S+ horses always have dapples.
Ofcourse there are also the champagne horses, they are similar to silver horses with how often they have dapples, but to me that looks more like leopard spots instead of dapples:
MSH Panthera PAS
(This was an old horse I had)
I hoped this helped a bit! :)
Edit: Oh and I just wanted to end with these two beauties, first one S+, Het DP, silver buckskin with cream:
MS4 It Escaped DP
Homo DP S+ liver:

Yay! So I wasnt completely wrong lol \:D/
Thank you @MasterStablesMS!
Morniyad is absolutely gorgeous 8-> -
I was doing some research on it too, and in real life what the horse eats can also cause dapples
-
@Jessj Wow, what the horse eats? That's really interesting, I'll have to look that up now!
I had actually made a thread in Help about non-silver, non S+ dapples recently. My best guess about horses lacking the above qualities (and without DP) is that either there's a hidden gene or there's a random element, either way pretty exciting to get a mystery dapple :D
Here are a few for example! Pretty subtle, but still lovely!

@peachtree here's one article about it https://animals.mom.me/causes-dappling-horses-coats-3471.html
-
My OP has silver, but is red based so technically it shouldn’t affect the cost. But I wonder if being homozygous sooty and at least het DP means that silver can affect the dapples anyway?
-
@Wolvevenfrost Thanks i love him, this is my 2nd season breeding chin and i am hooked on them!
-
@Jessj Thanks for the link! I feel like I've learned a lot :D I guess it never occurred to me that good nutrition could impact the visibility of dapples, but it totally makes sense.
@paradoxphoenix You made me curious so I looked for some other het Z chocolates and I found one that wasn't dappled, meanwhile a lot of chocolates that don't have any silver did have really strong dapples :-?ID: 247225

It all just depends I think, I found plenty het Z chocolates without dapples and with them as well. Like this one for example..Hom Sooty, Het Silver but with strong dapples.

I'll post the link in a sec.Post edited by Wolvevensleet at 2019-03-14 14:15:47 -
Most are just Chestnuts or Livers in this link as it's how I find chocolate Palomino's, but adding silver in kinda made them sparse.

I've been curious for a while how nd1 affects dapples so I took the opportunity today to add a copy to this girl and WOW! It really made her dapples pop!
Here is what she looked like before:

@bluchrystals I think that's the darkest chocolate palomino I've ever seen =P~

She is definitely dark. Her dam has no dapples at all, so it kinda surprised me when she popped up.

My favorite dappled baby this season. I think roaning over her chocolate dappled coat is beautiful even though I am not a huge fan of roans.
