Even Vs Uneven Lines
-
How far back does everyone consider even lines? All the way to foundations? Just 3, 4 or 5 generations back?
Thanks! -
all the way to foundation. The pedigree has to be even in all parts of the pedigree to be considered truly "even". Some people may not mind a horse being off by a single generation but others, like myself, are very strict on generations. That being said, i keep my generations even only up to 5th gen. All my 6th generation and up horses are considered "show breeder" and they get bred to a high PT stud just to produce show horses.Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

I breed even all the way. I'm up to 7th gen even now.

I use a prefix to mark mares (JL) and Studs (JS) and then add a letter of the alphabet to indicate generation after foundation (a- 2nd Gen, b- 3rd Gen, c- 4th Gen etc). My system can go up to 26 generations so haven't run into an issue keeping track. I label both mares and studs with the same generation letter so just have to match them up and don’t have to check pedigrees to make sure they are the same generation.Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genesThanked by 1KountryHorse

I breed completely even as well. I’ve got some 7G’s now :)Thanked by 1KountryHorse

To go along with what Bandit1119 said, i label my horses with my prefix, HS and then a number plus the letter G to indicate generation. So 1G is foundation, 2G - Second gen, 3G - third gen and so on. After fifth gen, i label mares as HS SB IDNUMBER, the SB indicating Show Breeder. I use letters of the alphabet to indicate specific genes. Lowercase means het and capitalized means hom. And i still have some empty letters for anything new!

Numbers 1-4, and 10 without an "i" in front, refer to white spotting genes
Stallions get proper names while all my mares are simply named with their ID numbers. Both get the prefix and the gene suffixes.
This is an example of a colt. He is fourth gen and is properly named. And following his name are the genes i made notations of :)

And a mare. By her name you know shes a second gen. The only other difference from the stud being her name, which is, as said, her ID number.

People label their horses for however is easiest for them to understand so it's usually just personal preference :) A lot of people wouldn't bother with the extent i go to but i have several lines going at once so it makes adding them to pasture much easierBluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

I fully even breed everything ... I think i might have one White 10 line not totally sure.
https://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=6983090 my first seventh gen ... I haven't breed my higher up for a bit because I keep forgetting or run out of time, so this is for now.

GMT'd CRVS1
2nd gen CRVS
3rd gen CRVS3 and so forth
I do it this way because I really like naming all my breeding stock ... then trying to come up with names as the lines go down :)Post edited by Corvus at 2019-03-14 19:57:16Thanked by 1KountryHorse
