Riding School Horses-Advice
-
First of, I'm not in riding school.
I am 22, and I do show jumping. I own 4 sport show jumpers which I adore.
But the problem here is, a friend of mine whose a trainer asked me recently to work with schooling horses of his whilst he's on vacation so that they get easier for newbies to ride.
What is it that I should do with them? I thought I'll do a lil' dressage and maybe a bit of jumping with some of them.
I have 3 weeks to work with them. There's 5 horses I should work with, of which one is a welsh pony, and others are 15,3-16,2 handed crosses.
What advice would you guys give me about this? I thank yall in advance. -
I think what you've suggested sounds about right.
Get them responsive to the aids for the three basic paces plus halt on the flat and popping a few low jumps without rushing before or after the fence.
3 weeks isn't a lot of time though as it will probably take you most of the first week to suss each one out and get a feel for what they already know and what their weaknesses or quirks are. -
Focus on responsiveness and manners really. School horses tend to learn evasiveness because they can get away with it a lot.
