DP maybe?
  • I’m pretty positive, because man is she dark for a buckskin, but I wanted to ask just to be sure.

  • I would say yes but I am not an expert.
  • A(t) "brown buckskins" tend to be darker than AA or Aa Buckskin.. so I'm going to venture to say no but don't quote me on that given that half of his bloodlines are black and not proven DP carriers
  • Looking at the search results for other eE aAt CCr nd2nd2 SSsty pP buckskins, a lot of them appear to be around the same shade, as Bambi said, the brown based buckskins do tend to be darker than average. My guess would be that your lovely filly does not have DP. Her dam definitely does not appear to have it (I totally missed that she was a Rhythm of Four, my bad), and as her sire is black, there's no telling on that side. Hom Ssty brown buckskins are even darker than your foal.

Here is a hom Ssty brown buckskin of mine that I believe to be het DP by her sire.

    DP & Dapples
Collector of tall, dark dappled riding horses in all shades.

  • I find this a tricky case. She could be DP, as her mom is a Rhythm Of Four and that herd helper is always hetero DP, so her mom is 100% a DP carrier. So if she is, she most likely got it from mom (looking at her sire's and grandsire/granddam offspring I do not see any clear evidence of DP).

This horse I have is guaranteed het DP, as his sire is homo DP.

Your foal looks a lot like him.

This is a horse that is from old lines, from the time there was no DP:

You can see this shade is much more greyish, less vibrant. Especially if you compare their necks, your filly is much blacker, this guy is a bit more pale/greylike.

However, this is a horse from the same old lines, that is a bit more blackish:

But still, she is more pale and more greyish.

So therefore I find it hard to make a conclusion based on the eye alone. I *think* she is a DP carrier, but the only way to know for sure is to breed her! I'd try to breed her to a homo (or het is okay too, but homo makes it easier) DP chestnut liver or chocolate horse, that way you can see if they produce a black chestnut or super dark chocolate (a homo DP horse).

  • Ah! Good catch on the rhythm of four mother! I just went straight to her offsprings and didn't see her herd helper tattoos!
  • Thanks for helping me out!
