Opinions on tattoo placing?
  • I am having the hardest time settling on designs for tattoos, it seems like every other week I'm redoing them and have to go around refreshing the images of all the horses they're on :)) But that's a problem for another day...

For now I'm trying to settle on where I want to place the tattoos. And... I'm super indecisive and need help ;)

I like the clean look of a horse without tattoos, so having it off to the side appeals to me, but I also finally like my tattoo lol and like the shoulder placement, so it's hard to decide. I'm really just asking for your personal opinions on your own tattoos, because in the end no one can make the decision for me :)) (sadly)

  • I like the shoulder.. but if you want it off the image itself but still "on the horse" the upper lip is hidden! That's where I put my KP, DP and other tattoos besides my stable tattoo and the brindle tattoo
  • Thank you for the advice @Bambi :D I do have them hidden on a few, but think I like the idea of being able to look back through a pedigree and see where certain traits were passed along.

Currently I only have two tattoos that I'm using to sort dapples & DP since I can't search for those normally.

  • I really love the look of your tattoo on the shoulder! Personally I like to think of the tattoos as similar to a real life brand so having it actually on the horse appeals to me. All of mine get my tattoo on their hip, unless their pattern makes it look bad there, then I put it on the shoulder.

  • @FlyingTurkeyFarm Thank you! I agree, I do like the more traditional use of them as well :)

I can't say I've noticed how other people work around this, but how do you deal with having a white tattoo on a very light-based horse? (or a dark tattoo on a dark horse)

  • I bought a second tattoo spot to have a dark tattoo, too. So, my light horses get dark tattoos and my dark horses get light tattoos :)

  • I tend to prefer placing very colorful tattoos in corners and restrained ones on the horse. If you can design it that way, making a dark or light outline around a tattoo can help it to show up on different colors.

This horse shows my 2nd gen tattoo in the upper left, Rabicano in the lower left, Sooty + in the lower right, my stable tattoo on the hip, DP on the thigh and Brown Carrier on the shoulder. The last three, especially the stable tattoo and Brown Carrier, display the bicolor technique. The stable tattoo is a shade of green that tends to blur on certain bay shades, so it was one of the first to get an outline.

  • I have a bunch as well. I just went on a massive spay/geld and tattoo crusade here and will be catching up on hj2 next. My main tattoos get placed on the hip if they are small or tattoo like or right bottom corner for my more picture tattoos

    Hip:

Baz: Blue butterfly. Horses were bred, altered and shown by me. Gets stuck on my show horses that I own the parents and bred myself. These get placed up for sale between 10-15 years old for 3000 in my open buddy chat JL show horse sales.

JL bred: intact horses that I have bred the entire pedigree and have used for breeding themselves. (My barn name used to be JOLO ranch which I normally shorten to JL so it’s a JL with 2 O’s connecting them in the middle.)

    image
    JS Nanotech Primer

Outside lined show horses. Small checkered heart

    image
    JLa 6190463

Then in the right corner I have 1 pic of a field with an open gate that I overlay a Roman numeral 1-3 meaning someone else bred horses in the last 3 generations of that horses pedigree.

1st Gen - bred by someone else and bought or a parent is from an outside barn

    image
    JLb IC RM Blue It

2nd Gen - at least 1 grandparent was bred by someone else. This one also has my nexus cow but I don’t put it on very often. I focus on my line tattoos first. The search allows me to find patterns easily enough. I also have a satin dress and a W8 penguin that all have their own corners to be stuck in.

    image
    JLb NX Star Lightz

3rd Gen - at least 1 great grandparent was from outside lines

    image
    JLc Wish You Were Here

Then for my horses that have outside lines 4+ Generations back they get the same picture but with the gate closed named my mudbloods. Looking at their family tab pedigree they are mine but somewhere in the background is someone else’s lines mixed in. (Yes, I was watching Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone when I was naming my tattoos)

On HJ2 I use the same tattoo system but my outside gate is a cute little owl sitting on a branch and the mudbloods have a little lighthouse

  • @SandyCreekAcres Oh, I really like the idea of a dark/light outline. I can see on your tattoos how it definitely makes them stand out more :)

@Bandit1119 Wow, your tattoos are so creative! The JOLO one looks like a bit like a fleur de lis, plus the idea of a tattoo overlaying another is totally new to me, how awesome. Thank you for sharing!

  • New tattoo, I tried to implement the contrasting outline technique this time ;) This one will be mostly on darker-based horses. Thoughts? (can anyone tell what this even is, lol)

  • Very nice! It should go well on all colors. I'm seeing a fleur-de-lis with a sword for the center petal, but maybe it's a very stylized Sword in the Stone. *G*

    image
  • :x Thank you! You are spot on :D it's a fleur-de-lis + sword combo! I'm greatly relieved that you were able to identify it, I was worried that it was so small it wouldn't be distinguishable.

I very much appreciate all of the help!

  • If you're worried about being it indistinguishable...you should look at mine =)) pretty sure with some of mine, I'll be the only one who knows what they are.
  • Gonna be honest @blu if I hadn't seen your post about your bootstrap line, that one definitely would have confused me :))

Otherwise all of the tattoos that I've noticed are pretty clear, I really like your frame warning tattoo, that's another creative one!

  • I always double place that one. It's empty inside so it goes around the sire tattoo.
  • That's awesome, using the transparency to layer them is such a great idea!

You have so many sire tattoos its impressive and they're all so distinctive too. I'm already having trouble coming up with unique designs and I'm only at tattoo #3 lol :))

My Exceptional producers get the Xpro tat in the bottom left corner. All of my horses are supposed to have the farm tat on the hip and supposedly the one on the shoulder is for my DP or other color specific horses though my tats are messed up on some horses. For example this one doesn't have dp, shouldn't have the lucky shoulder but I don't wanna pay the 500 to remove it lol.
  • Yours is a lovely uncomplicated neat tattoo Peachtree, so I think looks very nice on the shoulder

  • @Taridan Oh nice, I like the idea of an expro tattoo. I wish that there was a way to move the tattoos for free, having to remove and then add them back makes it a bit tricky.

@Kintara, Thank you! I was definitely trying to keep it clean and simple, glad that came across :D
