  • Are the mares you’re breeding him to also perfect foundations or top notch producers? If not, then it’s probably the mares you’re using that are leading to this issue

With my recent era 15 line, I’ve been breeding perfect foundation level stallions and mares and I don’t think I’ve had a single foal paper as Failed or Showable Only. I have been using straws and pasture bonuses though

  • Did those two foals pass SBA and then get papered?

  • All perfect foundations have identical breeding abilities. Sometimes you just get subpar foals just like in real life. 30-day pasture bonus can help you with that.

  • Ammit, I don't know how to tell like you are able, if I altered his foals myself or if sba did it. I'm pretty sure it wasn't me, that sba did them all but I'm beginning to doubt my memory. I know I could un-alter all foals and then run them through sba again to find out, but you may have a better method.

  • If they Didn't have the full pasture bonus, they could easily fail

  • But all of them? (no they didn't get the bonus I didn't get them all gmt'd in time to get a decent pasture bonus.)

And how on earth did we get passing foals before we had pastures?

  • I just bred him to 15 yellow mares as a test. Only 2 passed sba.
  • I do over half of my breeding by hand. I still end up with about the same amount of superior intact foals as I do with my pasture foals. Out of 62 pasture foals, I only had about 5 stallions pass SBA and test superior to an Ex Pro (or papered A with no comp needed) and only 2 mares that did the same. Honestly, I probably end up with more intact superior foals hand breeding them. I run everything through SBA and 2G's must comp test superior to an Ex Pro or paper A/Blue.

  • So about 1/8 passed? How many mares and stallions to I need to get a breed started (a small one)

And what's the advantages to hand breeding as opposed to pasture breeding?

  • Really, I think it's based on each person's preference. I use my primary pasture just to cut down on the numbers a bit. I like to do specific crosses. Say, like a homozygous tobiano to a homozygous appy to get a guaranteed tobi app foal. That's just my preference to try and make the most out of each season towards my breeding goal. Of course, I breed, basically, a red based CWARLN line. So, I need to make the most of my seasons as far as patterns. Most players only breed for 1 or 2 patterns/dilutes. Pastures are definitely a good thing for bulk breeding though and I still use my primary and 30 acre pastures each season.

As far as the 1/8 success rate, the mares had only been in that pasture 5 days or less, so I was surprised I got any that comp tested where I needed them to be, much less paper A/Blue. In the morning, I will go and check on my other account to see what the success rate was. Those mares had a full 30 benefit.

  • I'm not sure what you mean by "breeding for 1 or 2 patterns or dilutes"

  • How big were the pastures? How many foals total were produced?
And what are the steps to hand breed? I haven't figured that out unless I put a stallion to stud then breed to him.

But doesn't that take an awful lot of time if you have a couple hundred horses? (only some end up as breeders, the rest that fail go to show)

  • Oops, I use the 100 mare pastures for foundations. I use Exceptional producer mares and studs and get about 40% of foals passing SBA. I only keep A/Blue 2nd generations, so I cull more foals. And then I cull stallions or switch their gender to mares because I don't need many boys. End of the day, I only keep about 5 foals for breeding from my 100 foal pasture. Rest are show ponies because that's how I make money, show ponies. The goal is not how many pass Breeding Advice, but getting profitable show horses and a few horses to carry on genetics.

  • Yes, it takes pretty much all month to get all my mares bred. Of course that is not a 24/7 thing I do, but it still takes time. The three groups I just posted were from a 100 acre pasture. When I do my breeding, I just do a search for all of my unbred mares and start hitting the "in house breeding" button. Then it gives you a list of choices as far as pairing them with a stallion in your barns, using a straw, or using an embryo. It is somewhat tedious and a lengthy process, but for me, it is helps me tone down my impatient streak which usually glows in the dark. :)) For the longest time, we didn't have pastures, SBA, papering before a certain amount of foals or comp testing. I guess I just got used to doing things the long way.

  • Well I bred the stallion to 15 random mares that I hadn't bred yet (gen 1 yellows) and 2 passed so he's not a total dud. He's my only stud of this particular genetics, and there are 6 mares. I'm wondering if I should change gender on one of the mares to give me a second stud and possibly improve things.

    I appreciate the advice.

  • Only 15 mares isn't a large sampling. Breed him to 50 equivalent Perfect mares and you will better chances. You need more mares, not more studs. Perfect is 100% breeding ability, they are the best C/yellow papered foundations.

  • Trouble is, the average perfect foundation often needs 7 or more gmt's to get it to the genetics I want. But yes, what you say makes sense.
  • You can always breed up to it.

  • If you don’t have a stud with the genetics and/or can’t afford to make one, try putting out an ISO for straws with the genes, bone weight, etc you’re looking for. This is especially an easier way if you don’t have a lot of mares you’re looking to breed. At least with using straws you get equivalent to 1/2 of a full pasture bonus.

Also, if you want superior foals, make sure you’re breeding to equal ability (i.e. some combination of perfect foundations and top notch producers)

  • I just bought several perfect foundations from foundation rescue, one's that don't need too many gmts. I'll start working on them. They might not be ready this year, though.

So if instead of just breeding, I take straws from the stallion and breed the mares with the straws, I get a partial pasture bonus?

Ammit, I don't understand what you mean.

  • Yeah, using straws gives you the equivalent of 15 pasture bonus days
  • Thank you everyone for being so patient with me. I think grey hair means grey brain cells.
  • OopsDotCom - you don't need mares with perfect genetics. You can start your line with any genetics, as long the genes you want are somewhere in the mix you can breed up to your perfect genetic combo.
