I have some leftover GMTs from my black rabicano herd that I wanted to invest into brown horses. Thanks to this beautiful community, I have a tiny herd of two studs and about ten mares ready to GMT.
However, before I go completely ham, I want to understand the color goal Id like to achieve before accidentally wasting tokens (been there, it was not a fun recovery =)) )

Im starting with Candy Appys, and they are all at least Ee tt Ssty Ssty. Some are FF/Ff or PP/Pp

Ideally, I would like the herd to end up with this deep Hershey brown color, like her

She is EE at SstySsty pp (no f) and het DP

My brain puts the pieces together that to achieve that dark color, my horses would have to be Ee/EE, at, SstySsty (or S+) [no pp or ff] and at least het for DP.....is that correct?

FF/Ff/ff does not matter at all. Thats flaxen, and it only affects red based horses.

The most critical genes to achieve the really dark brown are the at, and hom sty, with DP making them extra dark. Pangare does slightly increase the size of the lighter area on the belly, yes, but not all that much.

This horse for instance has pangare, and no DP:

Can brown horses be homozygous for black? Can you make them homozygous for DP without them turning to a liver? :-?

Liver comes from red based horses with DP and Ssty, you'll never get a liver from an Ee or EE horse. Liver is just dark chestnut, which is just red.

Homozygous black and heterozygous black act the same, all it does is affect their offspring. EE horses will always throw black foals, Ee horses may or may not, cause they may throw e and then it depends on the horse they're paired with. If you're looking to breed brown, two Ee horses is not a sure bet to get black-based. If you have a heterozygous black horse you want to breed, I'd breed them to a homozygous black just to be sure.

I was thinking of making my base herd EE tt Ssty Ssty and DpDp...would that garuntee a start to a browm only producing line?

I feel like as long as you don't mix things like cream and Champagne, those genes check out for a nice dark brown. Here's one of mine with pangare as well, but he's hom sooty and DP. I'm selling straws from him too.

Just a note, two copies of the brown gene will give you the what the candy Appaloosa looks like now, whereas just one copy will give you that dark blackish brown:)

I've got similar breeding goals and just bred this filly:

Mom's a Candy Appy and dad's hom dp black. She's hom sty, het dp, and also has one copy of pangare
