Why is my liver horse black?
-
Can someone help me understand why this horse says she is liver but is showing as black? Is there a gene that I can change to make the liver show? Thank you in advance!

This is called a "black liver" and it is caused by the horse having two copies of the Sooty genes and the Dp gene. Lots of people love these horses.Thanked by 1Mensie

Thank you for the reply! I see, so if I were to remove one DP or one STY it would show red liver?
Or if I left it black would chinchilla show up?Post edited by Mensie at 2021-08-18 11:06:02Bluegrass 272432 | Forest 54250 | Mesa 9056 -
This horse does not have chinchilla. If you added chinchilla they would turn totaly white with red eyes. Is that the look you are going for?
If you remove a darkening gene this horse would be lighter but I advise against it if you want lots of liver foals.Post edited by Ammit at 2021-08-18 11:13:14Need to contact me? Read this first.

Yea I haven't added the chinchilla, was just wondering what she would look like. I expected red liver coloring when I removed the frame and was surprised she was black. I haven't quite decided on what look I am going for yet. I really appreciate the information.Bluegrass 272432 | Forest 54250 | Mesa 9056

Black livers are awesome for breeding. You're always guaranteed to pass the Sooty and the DP. If you breed them to a hom sooty plain Chestnut you get a het DP hom Sooty liver. If you breed them to a het DP hom Sooty liver, you have a 50% chance of another black liver. I use a lot of yellow papered mares in my breeding just because they have hom DP.Thanked by 1Mensie

Thank you! That is very helpful. She would probably make a better stallion then for my purposes.Bluegrass 272432 | Forest 54250 | Mesa 9056

If you want her to look a little less black without removing the ability to always throw liver foals, you could always change her Pangare and Flaxen to be homozygous for both to show...
She would look something like this

Also, just to add my 2 cents and because I saw it in the notes of your boy, adding s+ will definitely help make him look more red liver than black :) Not sure if you have already seen an example but here is a couple i found:

Also Pangare + is on sale in the RGS right now and would make him look stunning as well!

It does thank you! I'm not set on adding S+ to him just because I like his look and I've got others with it. Yours are beautiful!Bluegrass 272432 | Forest 54250 | Mesa 9056
