I got a liver! She was so dark with not a single sooty that I thought there might be a chance was DP, if not Homozygous DP. I test bred her. Inconclusive. Because she has no sooty at all so it’s hard. Yummed the foal. Rerolled her portrait a bunch to see if she’d stay dark. She never really changed.

Hmm....

I decided to take the gamble. Gave her both missing copies of sooty. And.....

Sweetheart Jewel’s dal must carry PATN1. Its impossible for her to get both copies from her sire. Solid horses can carry PATN1. I have quite a few. :)

As Paradox says, the dam of Sweetheart Jewel carries PATN1. PATN1 only shows up in testing if the horse also carries a copy of LP.

For example, this mare has had a leopard foal, so she must carry PATN. However, since she doesn't have any LP, she doesn't express the PATN and genetic testing didn't test her for it.

And actually, now that I inspect her foals, it looks like she's passed her PATN on to all of them (rather than the sire pass it along). The first allele in the genetic test comes from the sire and the second comes from the dam. For this filly, for example, you can see the LP on the first allele from her sire, but the PATN on the second allele means it came from her dam, not from her blanket appaloosa sire.

I've found a trick to catch it before breeding. If you can hang on to a GMT token(for me that's quite rare), you can pull the horse in question up and it will show on the list whether they already carry PATN1 or not.

@bluchrystals GMT's are a no go for me as barns are much more important lol!

@paradoxphoenix forgive me it was 1 or 2 in the morning and I've been up all night...I toke it too literally haha! I Now don't really understand though as I have 8 excluding Sweetheart Jewel, that are Hom PATN1 but ALL their dams don't have any Lp or PATN1 gene. It it really just that common in creates? I hope it is.

No worries. I’m not sure how common it is for non-LP creates to have PATN. I know I’ve created (and auctioned) many many many Appaloosas who have no PATN. And the liver dun stallion that I GMTd into an appy didn’t have PATN. But I have at least 4-5 known PATN carrier non-LP mares and one who is confirmed to not carry PATN because I couldn’t GMT PATN onto her offspring.

The rest? I have no idea. I haven’t tried to find out. :p

Re: non-LP creates having PATN. I don't really have an answer for that either. I have to accounts over on server 2, but neither of them breed for appy (automatic cull to show herd), so most of my discoveries of it are by accident. And if the stud involved has PATN, I really only investigate foals if they turn out leopard (hence why I just noticed Curocao getting her dam's PATN today). I think I have two or three that I know of in my account here, plus one more in Server 2.

Fun trivia time: leopard complex was a very early mutation in wild horses, so PATN can be carried by a lot of breeds that you don't expect to find it in. It can "hide" unnoticed for generations until a cross-breeding with an LP horse turns the PATN on.

I know of a case of a real life Arabian carrying PATN. Her half appy son by a non-PATN stallion inherited it.

And there's Reminic in Spots, an AQH. His dam line had LP that was either hidden by roan or extremely slowing varnishing. His sire line apparently had PATN. Boom, blanket appy quarter horse. Good thing for his owners that AQHA doesn't crop misplaced white anymore.

Technically I didn't breed these, but I'm looking forward to using them...all except Shadow Man. He won't be used until snowflake comes along because I'm adding snow to my livers and he's going to be my foundation for it. If it ever gets here! 8-> :!! :-?? =))

Black Splash Appaloosa was one of the first HH's I got in the game (when I started all of, like, a week ago) so I want to play with those genetics a bit, to try different base colors crossed with the Black Splash App or add pinto genes to the app genes and see what happens... I barely know what I'm doing or where exactly I want to go, but I have a few weeks to decide before I breed again :)

Of course in the HH process I had a lot of snips, including this one, who broke my heart because I LOVED the full leopard pattern :-( BUT he's the highest pointed foundation I've created (500+!), so, you win some, you lose some, I suppose. He's gonna make me lots of money at least ;)
